BINTULU: This year some 2,000 participants of the fourth Borneo International Kite Festival will attempt to fly the most number of kites simultaneously to enter the Malaysia Book of Records.
This was revealed by BDA deputy chairman Dato Sri Celestine Ujang Jilan at a media conference yesterday.
The largest team of flyers for this year's fest comes from Indonesia with 35 participants. A total of 14 countries, comprising 239 local and international kite flyers, are taking part in the fest to be held at the Old Airport from Aug 18 to 24 in connection with the 30th Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) anniversary and 45th year of Sarawak's progress in Malaysia.
Ujang later witnessed the presentation of RM57,000 in sponsorship to organising chairman Dr Razali Abon at Wisma Bintulu yesterday. The sponsors are Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd with RM5,000, Asian Bintulu Fertilizer (RM5,000), Bintulu Port Authority (RM10,000), Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd (RM10.000), Liquefied Natural Gas (RM10.000) and Murphy Oil Corporation (RM7,000).
Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing contributed RM10,000. The programme to take place at the Old Airport here from 1.30pm to 5pm is jointly organised by Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Bintulu Resident's Office, SEDC, Majlis Pelayang Malaysia (MPM), Persatuan Wau Sarawak (Pewasa), KPSU Bintulu, Bintulu Combined Education Office, Bintulu Kite Flyers and Federation of Chinese Association, Bintulu.
Side activities for the festival include trade and expo exhibitions, fun fair, cultural stage show, karaoke and kebaya contest.
Pesta Gudi' on Aug 16 will be for local flyers followed by a remote control car competition.
The launch will be on Aug 20 with more than 200 lucky draw prizes awaiting registered participants.
Razali, who is also Bintulu Resident, said the festival had achieved international status and proved an effective mechanism for bonding people from various countries and, diverse cultures. |
